Pulse Center Partners with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to Support Local Children in Need of Beds
While planning its annual comedy show fundraiser, Ilene Corina, President of Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy, learned through a local networking meeting hosted by 516/Ads of Long Island that some children in the community do not have beds of their own. Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit organization, mobilizes volunteers to build and deliver beds to children in need through an application-based program.
Recognizing that children may return home from the hospital without a bed—or may be ill and lack proper bedding—Corina proposed using the comedy show fundraiser to raise awareness and collect new bedding in support of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Pulse supporters answered the call, donating six comforter sets and 16 sets of sheets. Others ordered online and had them sent in advance.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace President Mariel Nasis said, “We so appreciate the opportunity to share our mission with Pulse and its guests. Because of them the future is brighter, as together we'll ensure that no child sleeps on the floor in our towns!”
In a conversation with a local pediatrician, Corina learned that families are routinely asked about needs such as food, utilities, and finances, but are not automatically asked whether their children have beds.
“This may be something that needs to change,” Corina said. “If it is simply a matter of asking whether a child has a bed, then when the answer is no, healthcare providers can offer the family a Sleep in Heavenly Peace brochure and encourage them to apply.”
