Reduced staffing may raise risks for patients.

For Immediate Release
With the nurses’ strike affecting several major New York hospital groups now in its eighth day, leading patient safety group Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy is advising patients and their families to ensure they have a patient advocate in place.
Ilene Corina, Board Certified Patient Advocate and President of Pulse says, “In light of the ongoing nurses' strike in New York, it is crucial to appoint a patient safety advocate to support you during both unexpected medical emergencies and planned care. Reduced staffing levels may pose additional risks of medical error.”

Unlike a healthcare proxy, a patient safety advocate does not make medical decisions on your behalf but works to ensure your safety by monitoring adherence to essential protocols such as hand hygiene, patient identification, and correct medication administration.

Corina emphasizes that the healthcare system presents numerous opportunities for error. “Now more than ever,” she says, “individuals must be proactive in safeguarding their well-being.”
